Transparency Ex

I'm not really into pop culture, but for this transparency assignment I thought it would be interesting to photoshop a layer of a celebrity's old face over one from their younger, more iconic years... (keeping the older face transparent). I considered doing this with people I know, like family members and such, but the differences in aged celebrities are far more evident, and recognizable to significantly more people. The plastic surgery factor also makes for more noticeable differences- features don't lie on the face in the same position they used to. Interesting experiment.

Drawing 3 Scratch and Wood videos

I wanted to combine the physical and representational wood by recreating miniature trees in wooden, caged environments. The cages aren't entirely wood (part cardboard) and also contain key features of living things... like feathers, fur, skin and bone.

For the scratching assignment, I wanted capture the reactions of someone getting scratched... the rest is explained in the video.

Portfolio Questions

Q- What do I want my work to visually communicate?
A- I've loved reading and writing stories for as long as I can remember... I have a vivid imagination that creates striking scenes and characters that I love sharing with people. I don't think my work has a message so much as a function- to immerse the viewer in a story or setting that can provide a memorable, momentary escape from ordinary life.

Q- Pick five things that you feel connected to

This is my favorite spot from back home. For many, many reasons... this spot is significant to me. Lots of great memories inspiration. I truly feel at home here.

I've moved several times over my life and as I've done so, I've brought pictures and posters from all sorts of things that inspire me, places I've been, things I've done, etc.

Silly as it may seem, Muppet's Treasure Island was the first movie I remember watching that truly fueled my imagination. Since then I've dreamt of freely exploring all sorts of fantastic places and coming across extraordinary people. It kind of started me off with the whole story telling thing.

I love traveling, exploring, learning and overcoming obstacles that surface while adventuring. Though it may be considered silly and dangerous, I also enjoy absentmindedly taking photos while driving and scrolling through them when I reach my destination... it's crazy what you can miss!

I never got great at skating, but I've always loved it. Skateboarding and rollerblading have always been some of my favorite pastimes, and were my only way of getting around for years. My friends and I used to skate together nearly every day back home... I guess that activity is something I feel connected to because loads of my best memories from my childhood involved skating in one way or the other.

Favorite Works (Portfolio 1)

Here are a series of works that demonstrate what I consider personal achievements in different mediums and understanding. Lots to learn yet! Still, it's nice to look back on the experimentation.

This may be my favorite painting thus far. I finished it last semester for an oil painting class. It's oil on wood, and portrays my vision of spirituality and heaven. The multiple facets of the form move like clockwork, and are inspired by my dreams. This painting is important to me largely because it was one of the first pieces I've created that I feel truly captures one of the bizarre scenes I've encountered in my dreams.

The next three pieces were also created last semester, and branch off of the first spirit painting in concept. In these figurative works, the spirit-like marks take solid form over the transparent bodies. I used to spend lots of time visualizing abstracted ways that the spirit could interact with the body... these paintings express those visualizations.

This is a photo I took of a combination of fluids. Though it's a couple years old, this remains one of my favorite works because of the depth and color.

These are two of my favorite drawings I finished for my RCAD portfolio. The drawing of the billboard was the first to require high concentration on detail from me, so I see it as a personal accomplishment.
